Project Nursery Collaboration: Creative Spaces

I want to share with you some of my favorite kids rooms from two books I just love!

The first  is Cool Kids’ Rooms , with photographs by Hisashi Tokuyoshi.  This book is filled with children’s rooms that have been created by Parisian artists, designers and photographers. The other book I would like to share with you is called, Bebes a Paris. This book is from Shufunotomosha, a Japanese publisher and it captures another slice of childhood spaces in Paris. I love these books because they portray a different sensibility about a child’s bedroom from a European point of view. Rooms that are filled with imagination and inspiration that offer a wide array of decorative ideas.

Cool Kids’ Rooms

I love almost all the rooms in this book. I have found so much inspiration on these pages and I never get tired of referring back to it for ideas.

The large antique bed holds well against a “mad” gallery of a child’s life. I love the random, yet purposeful assortment of everything from art to books to trucks.

My source of inspiration when I created the nursery station of Minnie Driver’s nursery was the images below!

Love the wall color of the nursery below! So peaceful…

More on the subject of creative decor for your child’s room…

I love the layout of this room: plenty of play space in the middle, soft colors to hold new creations and handmade touches everywhere making this room sing the child’s personality. Check out some kites here.

Wall stencils are an off-beat design idea, or even graffiti like wall art can be an interesting way to add character to a room. Notice how the t-shirt may have been the inspiration for the room’s decor?

The room wouldn’t be French without the well known French childern’s book Babar…a timeless classic. The use of your child’s favorite fictional characters such as Dr.Suess, Babar and other childhood favorites can add a classic touch to a room.

The eclectic and bohemian side can be fun to explore, even in your child’s room. There is a wild side to all of us. Great tapestries in soft colors, bold window treatments and a bed on the floor all add to the casbah feel.

Introduce the country you live in to your home. Traditional Mexican masks above the door, warm yellow and oranges like the color of tropical sunshine, and an iron gate detail for a bed frame. All perfect elements to a room well discovered.

The chamber of a princess…soft, pink and sophisticated. The use of a canopy over a bed that also serves as a day time couch is a sweet touch. White accents help keep this room from being to over done.

I hope you guys enjoyed these children’s rooms as much as I did. Rain or snow, my friends in Denver were a sunny stop on my book tour…

Last Thursday I left sunny LA and headed to snowy Denver for a book signing with my friends Debbie, Heather and Loree. I met these three amazing women at my store in Santa Monica and I am now lucky enough to call them friends. They have been to LA to visit me and it was fun to finally visit them and meet their family and friends.

Debbie opened her home Thursday night for a fantastic party complete with very unique vendors. These vendors  included Leslie Lewis from Leslie Lewis Designs and Holly Kuhn from Old Glory Antiques – a store in Denver that also hosts The Old Glory County Fair which I will be traveling back for in June.

I can not tell you enough how warm and loving all these gals are. One of the show-stopping attractions of the night was the desserts that matched the turquoise and white theme from the cover of the book. Tosha Mack provided the food, she is available for catering parties, weddings, etc. If you want her info, please leave a comment and I will provide it. Thank you Tosha!

They not only put on a fantastic party but even organized a question and answer time for all to enjoy. I had yet to do a Q & A about the book and it was a really fun twist to the book signing. It gave all of us a chance to connect and share our design ideas and inspirations.

A huge thank you to Heather Gibb who took such beautiful photographs! She also shot all the images of the children in my Little House and Annette Tatum catalogs. You can visit her blog for more images from the book signing. Thank you to all for a truly memorable trip. I can’t wait to come back in June!

I heart…

Just a quick note on the day of love. Several years ago I decided to take the pressure off what Valentines Day was supposed to look like and made it a family affair. Every year we have family dinner complete with all the roses, candy and hearts. A home cooked meal and lots of pink and red make for an easy dinner made with love.

Today my friend Jacqueline deMontravel the editor of Romantic Homes shot a story for the first issue of her new magazine Yum, out in June.

Just in time for Father’s day we were the “family” that has a special pancake breakfast on dad’s day. My husband even came home from work to jump in a shot or two while flipping pancakes. The afternoon went fast and the kids were glad to get to come home early from school to participate. PJ’s and pancakes in the afternoon…FUN!

I never seem to have enough reasons to use all of my china, Jacqueline dug out some of my old favorites to use.

Making the perfect pancake, we found this pancake ring/mold that helped us shape ‘perfect’ round pancakes at Sur La Table in Santa Monica.

Pink and Blue were the color themes!

Lots of fun toppings for the pancakes…chocolates, berries, peanut butter (my kids favorite) and much more!

Kids and my friend and photographer Bret Gum, everyone had fun in the kitchen.

The best part was the end…when we ate all the props!

Thanks Jacqueline for a fun day…look for the upcoming issue of the new YUM magazine this June. Great ideas and recipes for food and fun!

The Art of Arranging.

There is much to be said about the “art” of arranging. Whether it is trying to figure out the best way to assemble art and photos on a room wall or simply create an arrangement of books in a bookcase. It is a talent that takes practice and lots of trial and error. To be able to arrange or style the perfect look in your home can be daunting. Over the years I have struggled in my own home to figure out what looks best. How to arrange books so that they have that random look of having lived forever on a shelf. Should they be stacked horizontally or vertically? Or the challenge of what to do with my collection of photographs, so that they look interesting when on a wall. How to best display photos down a staircase? What are the rules and how do designers make their rooms with books and photos look fabulous? I have assembled some of my favorite magazine tear outs that offer inspiration and hopefully some solutions to the task of crafting a great personal gallery wall or bookcase. Enjoy the view and try some of these ideas at home!

A Life with Books…

There is a book I love called Living with Books that is worth exploring. Here the mixture of books and treasures works well. Often a tip to creating a great book shelf is to pick a theme. Like mixing in a collection of artifacts or Chinese vases. Often simplifying and sticking with one motif can really define a great book case and add interest to the room.

Creating a charming ‘mad’ professor look. Mixing in paperbacks with hardcover can work well in the right space. Here the casualness of the room can support the large book cases filled to the brim with books acting like “wallpaper” in the room.

Color from the spine of books can add decor and boldness to a room. Here the balance of artwork hung on the shelves mixes well with books. The collection of mercury glass and silver demonstrates a theme that is subtle but makes a statement.

The messy studio look is one of my favorites. Like a constant work in progress, nothing is too precious. Everything is a tool to be used over and over again.

Artful Arranging…

I love this hallway. All the red frames make for a fabulous look! I would love to take in this visual gallery of photography while walking down this hallway.

In my own home, I often lean art work against the wall. Layering photos or art can be a great way to fit in a collection of pieces when there is not enough wall space for everything.

A fabulous statement of a staircase gallery. It is as if each photo were part of a great play. Some line up in a row, some are slightly off but all working together to create a great drama and scale.

The Well Dressed Home Blog, Annette Tatum, blogs about interior and fashion design
There is much to be learned from the creative process of a child. All things special and important when lined up together. There can be no right or wrong in this case. Creating a collage look of well loved photos and art work can offer the perfect arrangement.

The Well Dressed Home Blog, Annette Tatum, blogs about interior and fashion design
The comfort of order. Sometimes in a room the perfect order is the perfect solution. I love a ‘lined’ up look with matching frames for a graphic look in a room.

The Well Dressed Home Blog, Annette Tatum, blogs about interior and fashion design
The solution to arranging a bookshelf or art on a wall is a personal statement and choice. There are no rules. For some, comfort can be found in a look that is more defined and even for others the random placement and every now and then additions, can create a comfortable lived in look that is soothing. Whatever your ‘look’ remember that it is the one place in your home where you can be creative and bold. Books add character to a room. How you let others discover your treasures depends on how you display them. Have fun and experiment with your home. There is nothing more entertaining than to step into someone’s home and be able to get a feeling of who lives there. It is not about the furniture that makes the room, what makes the room is the expression of you which if you let it can be found on the shelves and walls of your home.
